Bhutan has it all; culture, charming people, excellent rivers
and stunning mountains. It's the kind of place that rejuvenates the
soul. With that said… we are going back for more.
We had two amazing trips in 2007 and are looking forward to our November 2009 and November 2011 adventures. We would love for you to join us. We have the best combination
of rivers and cultural experiences possible for Tarkio’s 2009 Bhutan
trip. We have two fun-filled itineraries that will pack in the best of
what Bhutan has to offer.
"Even the camping nights are done in true style with a
full cook and a support team. When the Tarkio crew shows
up in camp everything is ready and waiting for us. The extraordinary
Bhutanese camp crew takes care of all the details, providing
a sense of luxury. You won't even have the responsibility of
setting up your own tent." - Land Heflin, owner/everything

BHUTAN aka ‘Druk Yul – Land of the Thunder Dragon’ is a land-locked country sandwiched between India in the south, east and west and by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China in the north. It has an area of approximately 46,500 square kilometers. In prior years, perhaps one of the least traveled to places in the world; Bhutan is now becoming a popular tourist destination. With its tourism policy of “low volume, high value” and a King’s concept of “Gross National Happiness”, Bhutan offers to the world a country that has its environment intact (boasting a 62 % forest coverage), has protected its culture & heritage and is perhaps the last remaining Buddhist Kingdom in the world.
“If not a lost world, Bhutan is a country that has yet to be swallowed up by the Coca-Cola culture that has permeated most of the globe” – Sarah Max, A First Descent in Undiscovered Bhutan, Bend Living June 2007
What more can be said about Bhutan that hasn't already been said?
See what Bhutan has to offer, meet the Bhutanese people, experience it for yourself.
As a reflection of their intense Buddhist religious beliefs, the Bhutanese have treasured the natural environment for centuries and today more than 62% of the land is still covered by forest and some of the rarest wildlife in the Himalayas.
Bhutan is the most endearing little kingdom on earth. A gigantic staircase rising from the Indian border to the high Himalayas of Tibet, the soaring peaks of Bhutan are an untapped treasure house of whitewater. The rivers are powerful and challenging. The mountains are magnificent. The people are delightful. The architecture and art are superb. All together, this is a world-class odyssey in a magical land. Far from being a static, restricted environment, Bhutan is a dynamic country whose development is focused on meeting the practical, spiritual and aesthetic needs of its people.
