2009 - Dates to be announced at later time
When reading below all items in “( )” are river alternatives
for those who wish to stay dry. A knowledgeable Bhutanese cultural
guide will accompany and educate on non-river activities
Day 1: Arrive in Paro,
head to hotel for lunch, afternoon hike to the stunning temple, Tigers
Nest. This is where Guru Remposhi first landed and meditated in Bhutan.
After the hike: back to the hotel for banquet-style welcome dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast
we will outfit boats and head to the Paro Chu river for a fun Class
III/IV river run. Then head to Thimpu, the capital city, for night
two. (Tour of the Paro Dzong).
Day 3: Drive over
scenic Dochu La pass with views of the Himalayas. Then down to the
Punakha Valley where we will have base camp on the Mo Chu River for
the next two nights. After dropping our bags of at camp we will head
to the lower Po Chu River for a Class II/III river run finishing with
the impressive Punakha Dzong. Back to the base camp for dinner and
camp fire stories.
Day 4: Paddle the beautiful
Mo Chu River with loads of fun class III/IV excitement. We will stop
to have lunch at a temple, and then finish at camp. (River
Alternative:
Interpretive tour of Punakha Dzong).
Day 5: Hike a scenic
trail to the put-in of the upper Po Chu River. Our boats will meet
us in trucks coming from the other side. The Upper Po Chu is class
III/IV with emerald green water. Then from the takeout we will head
45 minutes to our next hotel for dinner and showers. (River Alternative:
Hike beyond whitewater put-in for more scenery and small mountain
farms with incomparable charm. Then take a ride back in the truck
the boats arrived in.)
Day 6: Drive over Pele
La Pass with a lunch stop at Bhutan's largest Stupa. Then it's on
to the village of Trongsa for a tour of the Trongsa Dzong. That night
will be spent at a beautiful lodge just outside the town of Trongsa
overlooking Mangde Chu River Gorge.
Day 7: Hike up the
Mangde Chu, have lunch and paddle a super scenic class III/IV run.
From the take out we will head to our next base camp at Enchilling
where we will spend the next two nights. Enchilling was the home of
Bhutan's first king.
Day 8 & 9: Paddle
a stunning canyon on the lower Mangde Chu named Ema Datzi after the
Bhutanese national dish. (Alternative: Days
7&8, it is possible
to have an over night hike through small villages that have only ever
been witnessed by a handful of westerners. Arrive in Enchilling,
Day 9 raft Ema Datzi Canyon).
Day 10: Return back
over Pele La Pass and paddle the Dang Chu into the Puna Tsang Chu.
We will be spending the night in the town of Wangdi.
Day 11 & 12:Drive
past some the most impressive Class VI big water in the world. Then
we will run the Grande Canyon style ClassIII/IV of the Puna Tsange
Chu River. That night we will camp here and paddle again in the
morning before driving back to Thimpu. In Thimpu there will be time
for shopping, etc. (Alternative: On Day 12- it is possible to head
back early for more time in Thimpu).
